Part of the site was owned by the council and a smaller part in private ownership.

 

Historically the site was occupied by six terrace houses, now demolished, which was part of the characteristic typology of the local area.

 

The design for 5 affordable homes infills an urban block reinstating the urban grain in a district which has its grain broken in numerous areas by vacant pieces of land.

 

This site is particularly important as a continuation to blocks fronting the arterial road into the city centre. Street frontages are reinstated and the corner, which has a strong visual link to Ashton New Road, is articulated by an angled corner dwelling.

 

The new frontages follow the existing building lines and set up a similar rhythm of front entrance door positions. Scale, window proportions and materials are sympathetic of the neighbourhood.
